SUPPORT SPH ON BU GIVING DAY
As a practice-based school of public health, the Boston University School of Public Health is committed to promoting experiential learning activities to better prepare its graduates to be successful in the world of work, both domestically and globally. All MPH candidates are required to devote at least one semester to intensive practica in the United States or abroad, often in communities addressing underserved populations. SPH students have applied what they learn in the classroom—and learned from the people they work alongside in host organizations, gaining invaluable experience with urgent health challenges.
Over 50% of practicums are un-paid and often impede students - particularly students from underserved identities such as students of color, LGBTQ+ students, and first-generation students - interested in servicing their communities from pursing an un-paid position within a non-profit organization. SPH works to mitigate disparity in pay, however, many nonprofits are grant-funded and do not have financial capacity to support student interns.
Gifts made to Generation Health will allow SPH students the ability to pursue rewarding practicums within organizations improving health outcomes despite hardships. For BUSPH students, it means the freedom to pursue rewarding on-the ground experience in areas that are not generally paid or high-paying ones. For SPH, it means being able to maintain our proud tradition of creating equitable, diverse and inclusive opportunities for the next generation of public health scholars.
TOGETHER, WE'RE UNSTOPPABLE
