Support BU African American Studies on BU Giving Day

Boston University’s African American & Black Diaspora Studies (AFAMBDS) Program is proud to be at the center of conversations about tolerance, justice, cultural change and diversity. Our goal is to allow students practical training in such issues along with the theoretical tools necessary for either more advanced study or a more direct engagement in any range of professional fields.

AFAMBDS is multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary, with world class scholars from History, Political Science, Sociology, Economics, English, Art & Art History, Music, Ethnomusicology, Religion, and more. Because of this, there is room for students to pursue a wide range of interests while satisfying the background goals of the program.

In 2022, our department introduced a Major in African American & Black Diaspora Studies. There are presently 4 declared majors for the Class of 2025.

Beyond the classroom, BU’s AFAMBDS Program has one of the most intriguing and engaging events schedules on campus and is very much a part of student life. Lively interactions between faculty, staff, students and world-renowned guests make the intellectual life of our unit reach far beyond the campus and into the Boston area itself.

The Black Scholar is one of the oldest journals of Black studies and research in the country, founded in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969. The journal is now housed at BU’s African American & Black Diaspora Studies Program and edited by program director Louis Chude-Sokei, who has updated, expanded and refreshed its vision. Currently ranked #1 journal of Black studies in the United States.
